3 Tips to Keep Your Online Reputation Secure
Sandro: [00:00:01] Welcome to 60 second marketing my name is Sandro Galindo, I’m here with my co-host Liz Hersh. We are the podcast that helps your small business grow through social media, reputation Management and all things Digital Marketing in the time it takes to make your morning coffee. Today Liz is giving us tips to keep your reputation secure.
Liz: [00:00:21] Unfortunately most business owners have this mindset of set it and forget it. They create a web site or google my business listing and they think that’s all they need to do. But maintaining a positive digital reputation does require some effort on your part. So I have a couple quick tips. First remember to claim and regularly check your google my business listing. We’ve talked about this before but I think it bears repeating. I went to look up someone’s address so I quickly googled them and I could see over on the right their address phone number all of their information but then there were some questionable photos that also appeared with this Google my business listing, so I wasn’t sure if it was hacked or if maybe the business owner had never claimed it but it was suspect. So I sent the business a message to let them know that something odd was going on with their Google my business listings so again claim it and check it regularly because you don’t want that to be displaying incorrect information.
Liz: [00:01:23] My next tip is to run your website through a tool like Screaming Frog. There is a free version of screaming frog so you can follow the steps and see the results. Sandro and I were talking about this before we were recording he ran a website through screaming frog and it was a simple four page website that suddenly turned into 500 pages and he was like “All right what’s going on?”
Liz: [00:01:48] And it turns out that the Web site had been hacked and there were hundreds of spam pages that were out there probably causing some serious SEO damage to this Web site. So keep that in mind and do that and you’re on your own website because the business owner had no idea. So use tools like screaming frog because they can be really helpful.
Liz: [00:02:11] And my final tip is to set up Google alerts for yourself for your name for your business name and understand what if anything if what people are saying about you. It’s not going to give results for everything. So for example if someone is talking about you in a private or closed Facebook group you’re not going to be able to know that. But you can get a lot from Google alerts and it’s really good to know what people are saying about you on the Internet and setting up Google alerts just takes a couple of minutes so we’ll will include a link in the show notes for you. So those are tips remember that you need to be proactive and keep your reputation clean and positive.
Sandro: [00:02:50] Great tips Liz. Those are basics that every business owner should know about and should do even if it’s just once every quarter.
