Facebook has rolled out an alternative news feed they’re calling Explore. It’s slowly rolling out to everyone. Liz goes over what you’ll see inside this new option from Facebook.

The Facebook Explore Feed

Sandro: [00:00:03] Welcome to 60 Second Marketing. My name is Sandro Galindo & I’m here with my co-host Liz Hersh. Together we’re the only podcast that helps your small business grow through social media, SEO and all things digital marketing in the time it takes to change the batteries in your TV remote control. Today Liz is going to tell us about Facebook’s new Explorer feed.

Liz: [00:00:21] Facebook has officially rolled out their alternative news feed which they are calling Explore. You can see this yourself by going to Facebook.com/explore or if you’re in the mobile app. Expand that MORE menu in the top right hand corner. Scroll down and click on the option called Explore feed. A little side note: I can see this on my phone but Sandro cannot.

Sandro: [00:00:43] I cannot! Boo!

Liz: [00:00:44] So just keep an eye out for it. What you’ll see is a feed that helps Facebook users discover more content so this isn’t content from friends or pages that you might already follow. This is content Facebook thinks you might find interesting. Essentially it’s recommended content from pages, publishers & news organizations. It’s curated based on content that you already like and content that your friends and your networks are interested in. There are a few things to keep in mind. First up the main purpose of this is to essentially increase the time on site or the time you’re spending on the Facebook mobile app. Obviously Facebook wants you to spend all of your time in their app.

Liz: [00:01:27] Second it’s probably going to be another feed that Facebook could monetize at some point. But right now the feed doesn’t appear to include any advertising. So what we’re reading is this could be a really great way for pages to capture visibility that we all know has been declining over the last few years you know unless you pay for it. There doesn’t appear to be anything you can do to appear in the secondary feed but this is still relatively new and Facebook has said that that it is a test.

Liz: [00:01:56] So our recommendation is that for businesses you know keep publishing organically keep running your ad campaigns but keep doing some sporadic organic posts and you know we’ll see how this develops and you know make note of any additional impressions we may or may not be getting from from this Explore feed.

Sandro: [00:02:16] And one of the things you showed me in your Explore feed is that a lot of videos. Right?

Liz: [00:02:19] Tons of video! I think every story or every bit of content was video content.

Sandro: [00:02:26] So a good reason for businesses to be. . .

Liz: [00:02:28] To go all in on video.
