Focusing Your Website’s Message

Sandro: [00:00:03] Welcome to 60 second marketing, I’m Sandro Galindo and along with my co-host Liz Hersh we are the only podcast that delivers marketing advice for your small business in areas of SEO, reputation management and so much more in the time it takes to remember where you left your keys. Today we have a continuation on Liz’s journey to a new web site. Today she’s discussing your web site’s messaging.

Liz: [00:00:26] Earlier this summer I shared with you that I’m starting the process of updating my website because the business has evolved and it’s just time for an overhaul. Visually I think my website is fine. I still get compliments on it but what I think is really missing is a cohesive message. And in fact someone told me that it looks like a disjointed collection of services and he was wondering why they all fit together which I really appreciated that feedback because he was right. I mean the messaging is a mess and that’s really what we’re working on right now. So internally we’re having conversations about one question in particular and I thought I would share this question with you today. It’s a question that came from my business coach. It’s one that I continually revisit over the years and I think it’s one that you should have on your radar and you should attempt to answer it and continually attempt to answer it. So here’s the question: What do you do better than anyone else in the world?

Liz: [00:01:22] It’s a monster of a question. But at the same time it can be a very simple one to answer. So for example Southwest Airlines “bags fly free.” It’s not complicated but it really does make them stand out from all of the other airlines in their industry. So I toss this question out to you, our listeners I would love to hear from you and see how how you would answer it. How you’re going to attempt to answer it in the future is as business evolves and you really hone in on your message and your brand. We internally at Hersh PR have kind of a rough answer to that question. But we need to make it catchy because you know bags fly free is really simple and quick and catchy. My answer to that question right now would be very long winded and you’d be like oh my gosh what the heck are you saying to us. So I will save my answer for future episodes as we continue to refine it. But yes. Share your thoughts. What do you do better than anyone else in the world?

Sandro: [00:02:21] So my question is, once you have the answer to that question do you then focus your website on that answer?

Liz: [00:02:29] Yeah definitely. I mean the answer that I’m crafting, that’s what I want to be known for. That’s that’s the focus and I’m going to make sure that it is very prominent on the Web site for sure.
