Recently, author & Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg paid a visit to Cleveland. Liz & Sandro went to hear her speak at Cleveland Clinic. They each learned a lot and today Liz shares a few specific things she took away from Ms Sandberg’s talk.
What Liz Learned from Sheryl Sandberg
Sandro: [00:00:06] Welcome to 60 Second Marketing my name is Sandro Galindo I’m here with my co-host Liz Hersh. Together we’re the podcast that helps your small business grow through Web sites, social media, SEO and so much more in the time it takes to update all the apps on your iPhone. Last week Liz & I went to hear Sheryl Sandberg the COO of Facebook speak. And it really affected both of us. So today Liz is going to go over some of the things that affected her and that she learned.
Liz: [00:00:33] I will say that my biggest takeaways weren’t necessarily marketing related. However I still think they’re really relevant to business owners and entrepreneurs so I wanted to share them. My first takeaway was related to showing people appreciation. And Sheryl gave some great examples of just how little effort it really takes to show someone that you care to reach out to someone. It could be someone that you’re really close with or someone you haven’t seen in five years. And I wanted to remember that because I think we need to show a little more love in this world. So that was my one big takeaway.
Liz: [00:01:09] My second takeaway was related to how we can learn from failure I think yeah we all have good intentions of learning from mistakes but Sheryl gave a great example when she took some of the Facebook leadership to a military training team building exercise at Quantico. And they went through the exercise and then they did a full debrief and she shared with us that the Marines do a full debrief for everything even if it’s training with whatever it is a full debrief occurs. And I was like you know what that’s something that we all really should be applying to our businesses. I think you know myself personally when maybe we bumble something on the execution of a Web site we just kind of make a mental note and move on. We don’t all come together and sit down and talk about it and I think that’s really important. So those are my two big takeaways. All in all I was really impressed with with her talk. I have not read either of her two books yet but I will be picking them up to hopefully read on vacation.
Sandro [00:02:11] Thanks Liz. I did not know what the term “lean in” meant but apparently all my friends I told I went to go see Sheryl Sandberg. They said “oh Lean In” it is a great thing. I can’t wait to read her books also. Thank you for joining us. You will find us where you find your favorite podcast and if you’d like what you hear we’d love review.
