Today Sandro is going to be talking about a new feature from Google called Google Web sites.
Sandro: [00:00:26] About three weeks ago Google debuted their own Web site builder. Now before you get too excited and begin ditching Squarespace, WordPress or Wix perchance to rank higher by using Google’s own builder, let’s take a look at what Google websites does and its purpose. Essentially it’s a very simple and I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s dead simple, single page website builder. It takes about five minutes to build and it’s completely free for your business. And with the exception of countries that read right to left, it’s currently available worldwide. It’s soon to come to those other countries. And there in lies the audience for this product if you are currently in a native English speaking country this product is not really aimed at you. These super easy to build single page sites are mainly aimed at businesses just coming online in the developing world. Google’s announcement of Google Web sites was by all accounts muted here in the United States but they seem to have gone all out in places like Indonesia and India. It’s estimated that 90 percent of the businesses in the developing world don’t have a Web site. And this is a way for them to begin to claim their stake in the online world. A few other facts about Google Web sites the domain you’ll have when you build your site is whatever your business name is Dot business dot site. You can buy a custom domain for as low as twelve bucks. It doesn’t support schema or really any SEO. You can only have one page and no more. And it also doesn’t have any analytics currently.
[00:02:01] Also you cannot post videos or animated gifs only JPGs and PNG images. Finally, should you build one? If you already have a Web site the short answer is No. It’s not meant to replace your main web site. There’s so much more you can do at a regular site. However if your business in the US or UK and you don’t have a site and post mainly through Facebook you could benefit from this. Aside from that stick to your main website and understand this new Google product is mainly aimed at the developing world.
Liz: [00:02:32] Interesting not even access to Google Analytics. That’s crazy. This is good you know to keep tabs on. Thanks for sharing. That wraps up today’s episode.
